And the Emmy doesn't go to...

...Kyra Sedgwick is one wicked actress. Now this post isn't so much about the Emmys as much as it is Kyra's character Brenda Johnson on "The Closer".

I have a tiny confession to make first and that is this: I loathe southern accents. I resent myself for this but I even make an attempt to avoid the south, period. I mean all the manniersms and formalities and even the mind-set. Well...I can't get past it. It's mostly the accent though. I had a three hour layover in Georgia last week and I couldn't wait to get out of there. This all makes me very sad.

But I have to give kudos to Sedgwick for doing an outstanding job playing the role of Brenda Johnson. The character is so unexpected, refreshing, and spot-on. I can't stand the mannerisms, the accent, or that polite formal smile she always has plastered on her face but I sort of love her character anyways and appreciate how much it contrasts with her rather ambitious inner bitch. She gets the job done and she doesn't take crap from anyone.

I love Olivia from L&O. Really, I do. But it makes me sad to see The Closer overlooked when the heroine is so kick-ass.

Hmm I don't know much of

Hmm I don't know much of Kyra Sedgwick, (haven't seen her in hardly anything) but I thought she was good in "Personal Velocity", which, btw, had a woman director, writer, and cinematographer to boot. ;)

Personally I'm a little jealous of anyone w/any kind of accent other than the one I have. Nothing is worse to me than my "accent", which, to me of course- is no accent at all. It's basically 5 o'clock news reporter American English zzzz....

I love living in Los Angeles where there are endless accents . :) Including Southern. I think Southern accents are lilting and down home and pretty. I love the multitudes of sayings, too. My dad is from New Orleans and I think this is part of his numerous sayings and wise little vignettes.

Kyra Sedgwick's character is brilliant, yes, partly because she deviates from that Steel Magnolia-Southern Belle dichotomy that seems to be in place for Southern women. --Personally I can't stand her accent for another reason: it's so fantstically inconsistent that it hurts my South Carolina-trained ears (plus no one in Atlanta actually has an accent!).

I actually watched the Emmys with my closest feminist ally here at school, and she had the hardest time making a pick in that category. So many strong women who are wonderful role models--Mariska, Kyra, Geena Davis. Difficult, difficult pick.

"A woman for a general, and the soldiers will be women."

Daniella said it better.

Thank you. Yes. This is what I was trying to put into words late last night. My whole point put into better words. ^^
