I Hate Cal Thomas
I'm not the type of person to read the paper. I prefer my media to come filtered through the liberal lens of feministing, NPR or google. However I got into the habit of reading the local paper after one of my co-workers kept leaving it on the breakroom table. Of course I was drawn to the opinion section.
If negative stuff about Obama written by locals did not bother me enough I just had to read the opinion of a conservative nut job Cal Thomas. The first article I read was how Democrats are pushing away "faith voters". Voters of course who are of the Catholic faith and are also pro-life.
This line really struck me; "Democrats see no role for government in helping to restrict sinful MAN when HE wishes to kill the unborn, or allow - even promote - any and every relationship but traditional marriage.
It is in its failure to address these premier moral issues that the Democratic Party has unmasked itself as a party that cares less for God's agenda and more for its own, as it pursues the White House." This of course is meant to be a negative comment.
I don't understand why he uses the term HE when referring to people who seek abortion, because those would be women and maybe by some extension their doctors who may also be female. As a pro-choice mother I am completely pissed he says that Democrats 'allow' and promote women to have abortions to end pregnancies outside of traditional marriage. WTF? I myself had a child outside of traditional marriage. My sister a mother of 6 had her first child outside of marriage after she split up with the child's father. Democrats don't 'allow' abortion, the Constitution does because the right to access an abortion is a human right. Democrats do not promote abortion in any circumstance, only promote that women have the basic human right to make their own choices; both medically and morally.
The quote goes on to say the Democrats care more about their own agenda then God's agenda. Well I would hope so considering Democratic politicians represent more then just Catholics or Christians, they represent people from all faiths and those without any. In my opinion the separation of church and state is a good thing.
So of course another piece by him appeared in my local paper's opinion section recently about Governor Palin being criticized in the media about her personal life. He basically said the media holds Palin to a higher standard then it holds itself. But wait...the accused standard the media has that Palin should be at home with her down syndrome newborn, pregnant daughter and son in Iraq is the same standard the conservatives hold for the rest of us. Thomas accuses the media of hypocrisy, yet has the nerve to mention his own daughter's out of wedlock pregnancy and his own belief that abstinence works "100% of the time for those who practice it" and that Bristol Palin "joined the growing list of young women who came to realize that too late". Or maybe the growing number of young women who are uninformed about methods of conception such as hormonal birth control, thanks to the abstinence only sex education her own mother promotes.
So it turns out reading the paper is a great way to ruin my lunch break. Although I probably shouldn't be taking the opinions of a guy whose book cover is a picture of him and his cat too seriously.
It's funny, too, given how
It's funny, too, given how much Obama (a Protestant baptized as an adult) and Biden (a Catholic) have actually talked about their faith and its influence on their politics (to an extent that has actually turned off a number of Democrats).
I've been saying for a long
I've been saying for a long time that the Olympian should remove Cal Thomas from its paper. The man is a demagogue and a bigot, and he frankly represents a "straw man" of conservative views. Couldn't they do a little better, like Buckley or Will? (I hardly agree with these guys on anything, but at least they're intelligent... and just a touch less racist.)
In regard to this particular piece, I find it extraordinarily ironic that Thomas accuses Muslims of evangelizing at gunpoint. I mean, this is exactly what he advocates doing to them... he doesn't come anywhere near suggesting that we stop dropping bombs on the muslim world, but he does suggest that we add "spiritual" battle (read: conversion to "Christianity") to the mix. ie Bomb them to pieces, except the ones that convert. This madman would take us back to the dark ages.
One more note: I've gotten so sick of the blatant racism on the Olympian's comment pages that I've decided to do something about it. I'm collecting racist comments, documenting them to bring up the issue (today's Cal Thomas piece offered a vast, bottomless vat of this nasty shit). I'm going to get in touch with Unity in the Community to see if we can work together to get the Daily O to update its policies.
