Sex objectification- it's back and in style
Submitted by Julia on March 30, 2007 - 12:56am.I have recently read many articles written by adults who are scared that their preteen girls are growing up in an enviornment that is too sexual and turns their bodies into sex objects.
My response: Um, duh? As a young teenager who sees the effects of rampant sexual objectification on her high school peers, it isn't hard to see where young girls get the idea.
Case in point: Deal or No Deal. The popular television show where the males (the host and the banker) manipulate the contestant in a series of intellectual hoops and enticing prizes, and the women hold boxes. In skimpy dresses. Oh, they pose and smile, too. This isn't a controversial fringe show, this is a game show blasting in millions of homes across America. A girl's parents probably watch it- and then wonder why their daughter wants to buy a tube top.
Cater for you? I don't think so.
Submitted by Jessica on July 20, 2006 - 2:20pm.Years after the whole Spice Girls 'Girl power!' craze hysterical mania, I remembered feeling better now that the world of girls and boys band was slowly dying off. I have always been a fan of songwriters, proper ones that truly put their souls and hearts in their craft, so the less pop-marketed with a fake political agenda bands around, the better.
It does not mean that I dislike pop. I have always been a fan of Madonna, and always will. Like I said in an old blog entry:
The Face of Today’s Feminism
Submitted by Kampire on July 8, 2006 - 5:42pm.The other day I was watching a commercial for the new Tab Energy drink. Full of fabulous looking women with big hair long nails and high heels, it shows women throwing men into the backseat of their cars, commuting to work in 6 inch heels and performing various important, typically female tasks. Their slogan, “because women need a different kind of energy”.
Cosmopolitan magazine prides itself on being “Fun, Fearless and Female”. Cover lines from a couple of 2006 issues, “Are You Ever a Bitch? Secret Reasons Guys Love It,” “How to Meet a Man in 30 Days” and “What Sex is Like For Him, and How to Enhance Every Single Thing He Feels.”
"Post-Feminism"
Submitted by Joey on July 7, 2006 - 1:50pm.Feminism is over.
Yep, you heard me. I figured some of you might have missed the memo, so I wanted to inform you, just to avoid misunderstandings and confusion. Feminism is finished and the only feminists still around are aging left-overs from the 70s. The younger generations find feminism boring because it’s so theory-heavy and so political and so serious. Who can relate to that? And who wants to, really? The new generation of women is independent enough. We have jobs, juggle countless dates and gossip-fests with our friends and know how to dress and how to behave to impress the guys and make sure we land a husband before we turn 30. Not to mention that we know how to walk in dangerously high heels and how to type with 10-inch fingernails.
