I'm a nineteen year old studio art/geology major. I'm as yet undecided as to whether I'd rather pursue a career in art or paleontology. I love the outdoors (playing in the outdoors especially!) and I'm drawn to natural studies -evolutionary theory in particular. I tend to look at everything from a feminist perspective ... and I'm very much a radical feminist (in thought and action) because I'm very aware of the symbolism of everyday activities/words and find it hard to separate the symbolic meaning of a thing I do from the fact that I am doing it - and I find it difficult to disassociate the symbolic connotations of my action from myself. I don't eat meat and I'm trying to transition from lacto-vegetarianism into veganism. I love animals and am in the process of setting up - with a friend- a vegetarian group in my area. I love to write and draw and express myself - and I think I have a bit of a talent with words. Intelligence and knowledge are very important to me - I think they are the absolute most important shields against the barrage of shame and ignorant hatefulness that majorities throw at minorities to try and keep us subjugated(and so I strive to educate myself as much as possible). And ... I love camping and travel. I'm an intermediate level martial artist (Tang Soo Do), been with it two years- and I'm kind of an "amazon" feminist in my pursuit of personal strength/anger at the portrayal of women as innately weak.
- My sheroes
Mary Wollstonecraft, Madeleine Pelletier, my boss, Sojourner Truth, my mom, 'Ellie Sattler' from Jurassic Park - "We can discuss sexism in survival situations later." !! ;)
- Personal goals
My loftiest personal goal is to transfer in to an Ivy league school - or at least a highly selective school - by next summer. Whether I major in paleontology or art, I'll be pursuing a graduate degree.
- Bragging Rights
I made a perfect 5 on my AP exams!! I made a 30 on my ACT - haven't yet taken SAT, but I'll surely update when I do. ;) I helped co-found a vegitarian activist group. I bought my own car. I stopped wearing makeup and kept feeling beautiful. I've renounced beauty-competition with other women and have pledged myself to support and uplift them - and compete only intelectually.
- Favorite books
(Honestly, usually my 'favorite books' are the books I'm reading at the time the question is asked. :) But here goes... ) Jurassic Park and The Lost World by Michael Crichton, The Feminine Mystique, The Awakening, 'Goddesses, Whores, Wives and Slaves by' Sarah Pomeroy, 'What's Love Got to Do With It?: the evolution of human mating', any book with dinosaurs in it that isn't too overtly corny ...
